The Family

River Bear Newfoundlands was founded by Zoë Montague. Our name comes from living on the Westfield River in Massachusetts and from a wonderful rescue Lab/Newfoundland mix named Bear. Bear helped us raise the second generation here at the house. He’s gone on to better things but we remember him everyday.

• Zoë Montague is the originator and drive behind River Bear Newfoundlands. She actually does this in her retirement. Her favorite saying is “My house is run for my dogs, if you don’t like it we can meet elsewhere.”

• Dan Montague, Zoë’s husband, is retired and not only helps out with the dogs, but keeps the old house in shape and keeps it warm during these New England winters. He is the author of two published books, White Wings and Second Chance.

• Melanie Montague Carpenter is Dan and Zoë’s daughter. She gives the shots, puts drops in eyes and helps out. Melanie became the co-owner of Patsy after the great mouse caper. She is also a photographer.

• Robert Carpenter, artist, is one of Melanie’s sons. He is co-owner of Mac. Rob’s work has been used as prizes for dog shows.

• Clarkson McKey Carpenter, actor, is Melanie’s other son. He is co-owner of Ros. He named her after one of his favorite Shakespeare characters. McKey handles our dogs in the ring when he has the time.
